How To Update This document will give you step-by-step walkthroughs on how to protect yourself and your computer from Spyware, viruses and other online threats. We at “Computer Fare” put a comprehensive Spyware mitigation package on each and every new system and any system you bring us with Spyware related issues. We use several “Freeware” programs that will keep you safe from the numerous threats on the net. If we work on your computer or you buy a computer from us, we will install one of several antivirus programs. All of these will be freeware antivirus programs. Avast, AVG, and Antivirus are the most commonly used, choosing one, for your particular computer. Read through this document and you should not have any issues keeping your computer safe. Enjoy! (Recommended Usage: Once a week)1. Start Ad-aware. 2. click “check for updates now” on the bottom right. 3. click “connect” 4. If there is an update it will give you a yes or no option. If an update is available, click “yes” to download; if there’s not, then click “ok.” 5. click finish. To Run Ad-Aware . (Recommended Usage: Once every 2 weeks)1. Start ad-aware. 2. click “Start” on the bottom right. 3. make sure “Perform full system scan” is selected. 4. Click “next” 5. Let it run. 6. When completed, if it shows a red flashing sign and makes a strange noise then you have spyware, click “next” 7. Under “Scan Summary” it will show you all the items that were found with the amount listed next to it and under “Critical Objects” it will show you all the items individually. If you’ve done this before and recognize everything on the list as a threat, just check them and click “Next”. If this is your first time, or you don’t recognize some of the items on the list, go onto step 8. 8. Click the “Critical Objects” tab. 9. Click “name” twice on the light blue bar that runs across the higher part of the program below the tabs. (this will put all same named items together. 10. Check all things that are mal-ware, browser highjacker's, tracking cookies, pop-ups , opens unsolicited websites, porn dialers, etc. *NOTE* If you don’t know what something is, right click on the name, then click “item details” which is the top option. ( It will open a little screen telling you about what it does. If it mentions anything like that or sounds harmful, check it. All of the files that have the same name are the same program, so if you check one with that name and its bad, check them all.) 9. After all the bad files are checked, click “next” 10. Click “ok”. 11. Unless otherwise directed at this point, close the program. Note: If anything such as your Internet stops working after you do this, restart your Computer. If that doesn’t fix it, call us. How To Update Spybot – Search and Destroy To Update Spybot - Search and Destroy . (Recommended Usage: Once a week)1. Start Spybot Search and Destroy. 2. Click “Update” on the left side of the screen. 3. Click "Search for updates" on the top of the screen that appears. 4. If anything shows up in the list check all that appear by clicking the empty box next to each. If you get the message “No updates available” skip to step 6. 5. After all items are checked click “Download Updates” from the top of the screen. 6. Once that Finishes, Click “Immunize" on the left side of the screen. 6a. A box may appear stating that “All known bad products are already blocked” in which case skip to step 8. However, if the box states that “Additional protection is possible; please immunize;” continue on to step 7. 7. Click the word “Immunize” next to the green plus sign on the top of the screen 8. Close the program. To Run Spybot – Search and Destroy . (Recommended Usage: Once every 2 weeks)1. Start Spybot. 2. Click “Check for Problems”. 3. Let it run. 4. When completed; if you see anything in Red Lettering in the large white space then make sure everything there is checked. (Exclude Wild Tangent if you see this listed by un-checking it.) 5. Click “Fix Selected Problems” 6. Unless otherwise directed, at this point, close the Program. Spyware Blaster To Update Spyware Blaster. (Recommended Usage: Once a week) 1: Start Spyware blaster. 2. Click on “updates” on the bottom left. 3. click “check for updates” (if there are any updates, it will update automatically) 4. Once updating is complete click “enable protection for all” 5. Close the program. How To Update Microsoft Anti-Spyware Microsoft Anti-Spyware runs actively and asks you what you would like to do when spyware tries to install itself. If you are installing something or changing your home page, it may ask you if you would allow this, in which case you should select “allow”, however if a box comes out of nowhere asking what you would like to do, chances are its safe to click “don’t allow.” To Manually Update Microsoft Anti-Spyware (Auto updates: but if disabled, use once week)1. Start Microsoft Anti-Spyware. 2. Click “File” in the Top left of the Screen. 3. Click “Check For Updates.” 4. A Box should have appeared saying “AutoUpdater Status.” Let this scan complete. You’ll know it’s finished when 2 stars appear in the center and the “close” button is available to click. 5. Click Close. 6. Close Microsoft Anti-Spyware. To Run Microsoft Anti-Spyware . (Recommended Usage: Once every 2 weeks.)1. Start Microsoft Anti-Spyware. 2. Click “Run Quick Scan Now” at the right of the screen. 3. Let Scan Run. 4. Once finished, a popup will appear giving u a report on what was found. Click “Ok”. 5. There will be a list of all things found with small boxes next to each giving you a choice of what to do. (Quarantine, Remove, Ignore, Ignore always) Once u click something, a description will appear on the right side of the screen. Anything labeled a dialer, mal-ware, spyware, adware, etc. should be quarantined with the exception of Wild Tangent which should be checked as “Ignore always.” While Microsoft Anti-Spyware will have pre-selected options on some, using your own judgment is advisable. *Note* You can Remove (delete) items if you choose but if something is deleted that shouldn’t have been there will be no way to recover it. *Note* Kazaa, Imesh, and several other P2P file sharing programs will be detected and quarantined\removed by default. You should be aware if there are any music, pictures, files, etc. in these directories (folders) that you wish to save, move them out of that directory Before going on to step 6. 6. After choosing what to do with all the items found, click “Continue” 7. Wait for all the items to be removed. 8. If it asks you about restoring original Internet Explorer settings Click “Skip”, otherwise click “Ok” on the next box. 9. Close the program. How To Update Avast To Run Avast : (Recommended Usage: Once every 2 weeks)1. Start Avast 2. Wait for memory scan to complete. 3. Click the third item up on the left which is labeled "local discs". The Center area should change and it should say Scan local drives "on". If not, click that icon once more. 4. Click the arrow pointing to the right on the left side of the program. 5. Let it run 6. If any viruses are found, a pop-up will appear asking you what to do. You can try repairing, but in most cases you will need to quarantine or delete the files. I’d recommend trying to repair first, but if your familiar with the program, you might want to just go with “delete all” 7. After the scan finishes, close the program To update Avast (Updates Automatically)-------- 7. Click “Finished” 8. Close Program. How To Update Windows Update To Update Windows . (Recommended Usage: Whenever updates available.)1. If you see a little yellow Windows shield Icon or Windows flag Icon (Varies between operating system versions) on the toolbar on the bottom right part of your screen it means downloads are ready so, click that icon. 2. Express mode should be selected. Click “install” 3. Let it run. 4. After installation finishes, it may prompt you to restart your computer, do so after you have saved all data on your computer. To Update Windows Manually. If for some reason your updates are not automatic, you can update Windows manually. 1. Click the “Start menu,” select “All programs” or “Programs,” then click “Windows Update” near the top of the first list of programs. 2. Click “Express install” or “Scan for updates” (Varies between operating systems) 3. This will bring up all critical updates. If any, click install updates on the right side of the screen. |
